4 Kilos is a red wine from VT Mallorca made by the 4 Kilos winery in Felanitx. “4 Kilos”, slang for 4 million pesetas, was the initial investment Francesc Grimalt and Sergio Caballero made to start the winery – a modest sum for the sector that proves good wine is made not with big money but with passion and ambition for quality. 4 Kilos is made from the island’s native Callet grape. The grapes come from several estates in the south and north of Mallorca on “Call Vermell” soils, the name Mallorcans give to iron-rich loam-clay soils that add complexity to the wine. The vines are between 20 and 45 years old. 4 Kilos practises rational, very environmentally friendly farming with minimal intervention, using native ground cover with a large microbial population to keep good biodiversity in the vineyard. They enjoy a mild Mediterranean climate with dry, hot summers and little rain. After hand harvesting, the grapes are sorted. Each plot is fermented separately in stainless steel tanks and 2,500-litre wooden vats at 20–30°C. The wine is aged for 12 months in 600-litre Allier oak barrels. This 4 Kilos is a faithful, unadorned expression of Callet: medium-bodied, with good acidity that keeps it fresh and persistent on the palate.
